A supermarket has taken back its unfortunate title of 'most expensive' after following Tesco's lead. We reported last week how Tesco had increased the price of milk and chicken last week, making it the dearest out of the six main supermarkets for a basket of essentials. This week Sainsbury's has followed suit, increasing the price of its chicken breasts and milk, while Asda has also hiked the cost of chicken. With the exception of last week, Sainsbury's has been the 'most expensive' every week since mid September, with its bill now amounting to £13.83 for the basket of basics, which also includes bread, butter, beans, tea, coffee and beef mince. Click here to keep up to date with the latest Family news in our newsletter Lidl remains the cheapest for a 22nd consecutive week with a bill of £13.22, closely followed by Aldi at £13.23 and Asda at £13.35. Morrisons is in fourth place at £13.43, while Tesco - which this week put the price of its milk back down to £1.20 - is now the second most expensive at £13.75. The price rises come as shoppers have been warned to brace themselves for price hikes if conflict in the Middle East continues. Just last week analysts warned that by November, UK food prices could be 50% higher than they were at the start of the cost of living crisis. Our comparison has tracked the cost of products since March 2022 and looks at the cheapest items available in stores including budget ranges such as Morrisons' Savers, Sainsbury's Stamford Street and Asda's Just Essentials. Not all retailers agree with the findings however. Aldi has always argued that the products aren't like-for-like, saying its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and its coffee are of 'higher quality' than the comparative products used and its tins of beans are heavier than some of the other retailers'. An Aldi spokesperson said: "Our customers know they can always count on us for great value across the board, without needing to join a club or show a loyalty card. That’s why Which? has named us Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for five years running." Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's. Sainsbury's says the 'review of a limited number of products does not reflect the fantastic value' customers will find in store and says it's 'committed to offering customers great choice and value when they shop with us'.
