During the annual board of governors meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), India urged the institution to enhance its lending capacity and adopt a more transformational approach to support developing economies facing rising global uncertainties. Pankaj Chaudhary, India's Minister of State for Finance, stressed that ADB must develop strategies to meet the evolving needs of larger developing member countries like India, which may soon reach their borrowing limits. He highlighted the importance of capital expansion measures, such as hybrid and callable capital, to prevent exposure limits from hindering development financing. Chaudhary pointed out that the current geopolitical landscape presents interconnected challenges, including energy insecurity, food shortages, and supply chain disruptions, which necessitate large-scale responses rather than incremental solutions. Despite global turbulence, India has shown economic resilience, driven by strong fundamentals and ongoing reforms. However, significant development needs in infrastructure, climate transition, and human capital remain, requiring access to long-term, affordable financing. India also called for broader reforms in multilateral development banks to mobilize greater resources and emphasized ADB's role in supporting digital public infrastructure to promote inclusive growth.
