During its annual meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) called for urgent structural reforms and enhanced regional cooperation in the Asia Pacific. ADB President Masato Kanda warned that the region is at a 'new crossroads' due to rising geopolitical tensions, economic disruptions, and environmental challenges. He identified the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a significant risk to Asia's economic outlook, stressing that the region's complex supply chains make it particularly vulnerable to global shocks. In response, ADB committed a record $44 billion for 2025, including over $29 billion from its own resources, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. Key initiatives announced include the $50 billion Pan-Asia Power Grid to enhance cross-border energy integration and a $20 billion Asia-Pacific Digital Highway to improve digital infrastructure. Additionally, ADB aims to quadruple its private sector financing to $13 billion annually by 2030 and expand its trade and supply chain finance program. Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also proposed the establishment of a 'Digital Customs and Logistics Alliance' to facilitate cross-border trade and enhance customs procedures.
