Samsung has announced a significant breakthrough in health technology with its Galaxy Watch6, which can predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) episodes. Conducted in partnership with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in South Korea, the clinical study demonstrated that the watch could forecast fainting events with 84.6% accuracy. VVS is characterized by sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, often leading to fainting and potential injuries. Professor Junhwan Cho from Chung-Ang University noted that 40% of individuals may experience VVS at some point, with many facing recurrent episodes. The study evaluated 132 patients during induced fainting tests, using the watch’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and an AI algorithm to analyze heart rate variability (HRV) data. The findings, published in the “European Heart Journal – Digital Health,” highlight the potential of wearable technology to transition healthcare from reactive to preventive care. Samsung plans to enhance its health monitoring features and expand collaborations with medical institutions to lead in digital health innovation.
