Maharashtra has reported its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in 2026, involving a seven-month-old boy from Washim district. Initially suspected of having an influenza-like illness, the child tested positive for HMPV on March 30, 2026, through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. He was admitted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Nagpur and has since been successfully treated and discharged. Dr. Raju Sule, the state surveillance officer, noted that this is likely the first confirmed case in Maharashtra, although sporadic suspected cases have been reported previously. Health officials have assured the public that HMPV is generally mild and there is no outbreak in the state. The virus, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, primarily affects the respiratory tract and can cause a range of illnesses from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory diseases. Following the detection of the case, health authorities tested five close contacts of the child, all of whom tested negative for HMPV, indicating no immediate risk of spread within the household. Dr. Sandeep Sangale, joint director of health services, emphasized that there is no cause for panic as symptoms are similar to those of a common cold.
