In Nuh, Haryana, two sanitation workers, Rajender Kumar (27) and Abdul Kalam (30), tragically suffocated while cleaning a 25-feet-deep sewer line without safety gear on Tuesday. Following the incident, Nuh Deputy Commissioner Akhil Pilani ordered an inquiry, which will be led by Firozpur Jhirka Subdivisional Magistrate Laxmi Narayan. A report is expected within a week. A junior engineer, Mahboob Khan, has been suspended for failing to enforce safety protocols, and an FIR has been filed against the public health engineering department's sub-divisional officer, junior engineer, and the contractor involved. The contractor, Mohammad Taufique, is currently absconding. The district administration has announced a compensation of ₹30 lakh (approximately $36,000 USD) to each family of the deceased workers, as per the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act. In response to the incident, manual sewer cleaning has been suspended, and all future cleaning will be conducted using machinery to prevent such tragedies.
