A delegation of traders from New Delhi met with Sanjeev Khirwar, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner, to express concerns over the MCD's recent initiative to seal commercial units operating in residential areas. This survey is part of compliance with a Supreme Court order from April. Brijesh Goyal, chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), emphasized that sealing actions should be deferred until the Delhi Master Plan 2041 is fully implemented, as it will clarify the demarcation between residential and commercial areas. Goyal pointed out that many areas in Delhi allow for commercial activities within residential zones, and thus clarity is needed. He also recalled a similar situation in 2006 that led to widespread sealing of shops, raising fears among traders about potential harassment. The commissioner assured the group that the MCD would consult with the Delhi government and other agencies before proceeding with any actions. Additionally, Goyal announced that traders can now apply for trade licenses online, with a new order expected to be released shortly.
