The Immigration Department of Malaysia has issued a clear directive against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for generating or editing passport photos. In a recent Facebook announcement, the department emphasized that applicants must submit original and clear photographs that adhere to specific guidelines, which include having a white background and even lighting. The Immigration Department warned that any submission of false information or AI-generated photos constitutes a serious offense. Violators may face rejection of their passport applications and potential legal repercussions under the Passport Act 1966 (Act 150). Furthermore, the department's director-general, Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, highlighted that immigration officers possess the expertise to detect AI-generated images, particularly in online applications. The department's reminder aims to maintain the integrity of the passport application process and ensure that all submitted images meet the required standards.
