Maharashtra's Chief Electoral Officer, S. Chokkalingam, has identified a significant lag in the pre-Special Intensive Revision (SIR) mapping in urban areas, particularly in cities like Mumbai (49.4%), Pune (39.8%), and Thane (45.5%). In contrast, rural districts such as Gadchiroli (90.3%) and Hingoli (88.5%) have made substantial progress, with the state overall completing 66.42% of the work. To address the slow pace in urban centres, Chokkalingam has proposed a self-mapping initiative, similar to the census self-enumeration model, which would allow voters to input their details without the need for document uploads. This approach aims to streamline the verification process, especially for younger voters who must link to the 2002 electoral rolls. The proposal has been sent to the Election Commission of India (ECI) for approval, and officials believe that the higher digital access in urban areas could facilitate this self-mapping process.
