The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for a by-election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) from the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency. This bypoll was necessitated due to the vacancy created when Chandrashekhar Krishnarao Bawankule vacated his seat after being elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The seat became vacant on November 23, 2024, and was originally due to serve until January 1, 2028. The ECI's notification for the election will be issued on May 25, 2026, with candidates required to file their nominations by June 1, 2026. The scrutiny of these nominations is scheduled for June 2, 2026, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 4, 2026. Polling will occur on June 18, 2026, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, and the counting of votes will take place on June 22, 2026. The entire electoral process is expected to conclude by June 25, 2026. The ECI noted that the by-election could not be held earlier due to unmet criteria regarding local body functioning and elector availability, which have now been confirmed by the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra.
