In 2024, Ludhiana, the industrial capital of Punjab, India, reported 483 road accidents that resulted in 376 fatalities, yielding a shocking fatality rate of 77.84%. This marks a slight improvement from the 504 accidents and 402 deaths recorded in 2023, yet the city remains one of the most dangerous urban areas for road safety in the country. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data highlights a persistent trend of high fatality rates, with nearly eight out of ten accidents resulting in death. In comparison, other cities like Varanasi and Pune also report alarming fatality rates, with Varanasi at 112%. Experts, including Dr. Kamal Soi, attribute Ludhiana's dire situation to inadequate infrastructure, insufficient traffic enforcement, and poor road conditions. The city has only about 70 traffic police personnel per one lakh population, far below the sanctioned strength of 220. Despite the Punjab government's introduction of 144 hi-tech vehicles under the 'Sadak Surakhya Force' in January 2024 aimed at improving traffic management, Ludhiana's road safety continues to be critically compromised.
