The Delhi Police has established a dedicated Bomb Threat Investigation Cell at its headquarters to address the increasing number of bomb threats received via email. This initiative follows a significant rise in hoax threats targeting schools, hospitals, courts, and the Indira Gandhi International Airport over the past year. The new unit will serve as a central repository for all bomb threat emails, maintaining a comprehensive database and associated technical data. Operating under the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) wing, the cell will be supervised by Assistant Commissioner of Police Pawan Kumar and staffed by a small team. Investigations have shown that many threats are sent using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and spoofed identities, complicating tracing efforts for local police. The new unit aims to conduct detailed examinations of threats, assess their credibility, and identify patterns, while coordinating with district units to ensure prompt investigations. District police are required to report any bomb threats to the specialized cell, which will enhance the overall response strategy.
