Awadhesh Prasad, a Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party, has expressed serious concerns regarding the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited's (UPPCL) recent decision to implement a 10% surcharge on electricity bills. He warned that the government's introduction of smart meters could potentially double electricity bills, increasing them by up to 100%. Prasad called for the removal of these meters, stating they could lead to severe financial strain on consumers. The surcharge, termed the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS), is set to take effect in the June 2026 billing cycle, as per regulations established by the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC). This increase is attributed to rising fuel prices, which have significantly impacted consumers, with petrol and diesel prices reaching record highs in major cities. The UPPCL's directive mandates that this surcharge be uniformly applied across all consumer categories, with detailed calculations to be made available for transparency.
