Two days after the Mumbai Press Club suspended three members for allegedly facilitating a gathering of individuals accused in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon case, officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) visited the club seeking documents related to the event. The January 19 gathering included accused persons such as Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, and others, all currently out on bail. The club's internal inquiry concluded that the three suspended members—Gurbir Singh, Bernard D’Mello, and Shrikant Modak—may have violated bail conditions imposed by the courts. The club stated that it cannot overlook conduct that could bring it into disrepute or violate judicial orders. In response, the suspended members denied any wrongdoing, suggesting that their expulsion was politically motivated ahead of upcoming Press Club elections. They argued that the club should not be responsible for monitoring the bail conditions of its members. The club is cooperating fully with the NIA's investigation, having already provided the requested documents.
