In Zirakpur, Punjab, India, police have arrested a revenue official, Jagdish Sharma, and his associate, Madhu Singh, for allegedly committing land fraud against Jaswinder Kaur. The fraud involved forging documents to illegally transfer approximately 6 bighas of land that Kaur inherited from her mother in 2007. At the time of the fraudulent activity, the land was under a court-ordered status quo, which the accused ignored. They manipulated land records in 2012, inflating the landholding and omitting the court stay. They allegedly deceived Kaur into signing a general power of attorney under false pretenses, allowing Singh to execute a sale deed in favor of his mother, Sita Devi. The scheme unraveled in 2022 when discrepancies were noted during a mutation approval process, leading to an inquiry that confirmed the forgery. Following this, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohali approved the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating and forgery.
