A drone strike on Saturday targeted a market in Abu Zaeima, a town in North Kordofan state, Sudan, resulting in the deaths of 11 civilians and injuring many more, as reported by the rights group Emergency Lawyers. The attack is part of a surge in aerial assaults amid the ongoing conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Emergency Lawyers noted that similar drone strikes had occurred in nearby villages and civilian vehicles shortly before this incident. Witnesses also reported another drone strike on a fuel station in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, where four wounded civilians were treated at a local hospital. The violence in the Kordofan region has intensified, with nearly 70 fatalities recorded in recent drone strikes. The UN has documented that at least 880 civilians have been killed in drone strikes across Sudan from January to April. The ongoing conflict has displaced over 11 million people and is described as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with Kordofan being a strategically significant area due to its resources and proximity to RSF strongholds.
