The Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital in Mohali, Punjab, has been functioning without a fire no-objection certificate (NOC) for over a year, with its previous certification expiring in January 2022. The hospital, which serves nearly 400 patients daily, has faced significant challenges in meeting fire safety regulations outlined in the National Building Code of India, 2016. Fire officials have repeatedly communicated the NOC requirements to the hospital during various meetings. Key issues include a porta thermo-fab structure on the rooftops that poses a risk in the event of a fire and a non-functional pump room. Despite these challenges, additional medical superintendent Amit Aggarwal stated that around 80% of the flagged issues have been resolved, and they expect to obtain the NOC soon. However, a recent minor fire incident due to a short circuit in the emergency wing has raised serious concerns about the hospital's preparedness for fire emergencies. As the only major government facility in Mohali, compliance with fire safety norms is crucial to ensure patient safety.
