The Central Government of India has announced a temporary waiver on all customs duties related to cotton imports for five months, starting from June 1, 2026. This exemption includes both the basic customs duty and the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC), remaining effective until October 30, 2026. The initiative is designed to bolster the availability of raw cotton for domestic textile manufacturers, allowing them to manage input costs more effectively and maintain production levels. The Finance Ministry stated that the decision was made in the public interest, aiming to make overseas cotton purchases more economical and ensure a steady supply during the production cycle. Industry stakeholders have long expressed concerns over cotton supply and pricing, and this duty waiver is expected to alleviate some of the pressure caused by fluctuating domestic supplies. By facilitating easier access to imported cotton, textile manufacturers may enhance their operational efficiency and competitiveness in the market.
