In a recent safety drive on the River Ganga in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, six boatmen were booked for violating safety norms, leading to the seizure of six boats. Police registered cases against the boatmen under section 282 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash navigation. The operation involved joint patrols by police teams from Bhelupur, Dashashwamedh, and Kotwali, which revealed that several boats were carrying passengers without life jackets and beyond their permitted capacity. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gaurav Kumar monitored the drive and noted that some boatmen attempted to comply with safety measures only after being confronted by police. The authorities stressed the importance of following safety regulations, stating that approximately 1,200 boats operate on the Ganga in Varanasi, and all operators must ensure compliance to prevent accidents.
