On Thursday, a Chinese military court sentenced former defence ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu to suspended death sentences for bribery, as reported by the official Xinhua News Agency. Wei, who served from 2018 to 2023, was found guilty of accepting bribes, while Li, who succeeded him, was convicted of both accepting and offering bribes. These suspended sentences are often commuted to life imprisonment in China. This development is part of President Xi Jinping's extensive anti-corruption campaign, which has seen the removal of high-ranking officials and a significant reduction in the size of the Central Military Commission, now comprising only one member aside from Xi himself. Li, who had a background in missile and procurement within the People's Liberation Army, was removed from his position in October 2023 and replaced by Dong Jun. The Communist Party expelled both men in 2024, further solidifying Xi's control over the military and political landscape.
