The Government of India has officially appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), set to take over from General Anil Chauhan, who will conclude his term on May 30. Lt Gen Subramani has an extensive military career spanning over 37 years, having served in various capacities, including as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2025. His previous roles include Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command.
Commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, Lt Gen Subramani has demonstrated leadership across diverse conflict zones and terrains. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and has pursued further education at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK and the National Defence College in New Delhi. He holds a Master of Arts degree from King's College London and an M Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University. His service has been recognized with several awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
