Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Indian National Congress, has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government of a 'double failure' in ensuring fuel and fertilizer security for India. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Kharge pointed out that India's crude oil production has been declining for eleven consecutive years, with a nearly 22% drop since 2014-15. He noted that gas output has also suffered a significant decline of around 40%, falling from 47,555 MMSCM in 2011-12 to just 28,672 MMSCM in 2020-21. Furthermore, Kharge criticized the government for halting new LPG connections and causing long wait times for rural residents. On the fertilizer front, he highlighted that production has reached a five-year low, with a 24.6% year-on-year decrease, exacerbated by geopolitical disruptions and a lack of import diversification. Kharge's comments come in the wake of remarks by BJP member Murli Manohar Joshi, who suggested that India should move away from the rhetoric of being a 'Vishwaguru' (global teacher).
