India's renewable energy generation experienced a remarkable surge, reaching 98 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025, which is double the previous record of 49 TWh set in 2022. This increase was primarily driven by solar and wind energy, which saw year-on-year increases of 53 TWh (37%) and 22 TWh (28%), respectively, according to the report titled 'Global Electricity Review 2026' released by Ember, an energy think tank. Despite this significant growth in renewables, coal continues to dominate India's electricity landscape, providing 71% of the country's electricity, which is notably higher than the Asian average of 52% and the global average of 33%. The report also noted a decline in coal generation by 44 TWh in 2025, attributed to the rise in renewable energy and lower-than-average demand growth. Over the past decade, coal generation in India has increased by 468 TWh (46%), solidifying the country's position as the second-largest coal generator globally, following China.
