India has ramped up its piped natural gas (PNG) adoption, establishing over 501,000 new connections since March 2023, as geopolitical tensions in West Asia disrupt liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies. The government is urging households and industries to switch to PNG, which is less affected by the ongoing crisis. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, reported that 568,000 consumers have registered for new connections. As of April 19, about 39,400 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections. Despite the geopolitical issues, domestic LPG supply remains stable, with online bookings reaching 98% across the industry. The government has also increased commercial LPG availability to around 70% of pre-crisis levels and doubled daily supplies of 5-kg cylinders for migrant workers. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has extended the nationwide PNG expansion drive until June 30, 2023, to facilitate faster approvals and support the transition to PNG for commercial users.
