The Indian government is prioritizing the rapid rollout of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and enhancing transmission infrastructure to better integrate renewable energy (RE) into the grid. With current BESS capacity at 0.27 gigawatts, the goal is to reach 174 gigawatts by 2035-36, addressing challenges like high evening power prices and renewable energy curtailment.
- 01Government meeting focused on accelerating battery energy storage systems (BESS) deployment.
- 02Current BESS capacity in India is 0.27 gigawatts, with a target of 174 gigawatts by 2035-36.
- 03High evening power demand has led to prices soaring to ₹20 per unit due to limited storage.
- 04India curtailed 31 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity in early 2023 due to transmission issues.
- 05Time-of-day tariffs are being discussed to optimize renewable energy consumption.

In response to the pressing need for improved transmission infrastructure and faster deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS), India's ministries of power, new and renewable energy, and heavy industries convened a meeting to strategize on renewable energy (RE) integration. Power Minister Manohar Lal emphasized the importance of maximizing renewable energy utilization and developing a smarter power ecosystem. Currently, India has an installed BESS capacity of 0.27 gigawatts (GW), but the Central Electricity Authority projects a significant increase to 174 GW by 2035-36, which includes 80 GW of BESS. The meeting also highlighted the urgency of expediting transmission projects to reduce the 31 GW of renewable energy capacity curtailed in the first quarter of 2023 due to transmission limitations. Furthermore, discussions included implementing time-of-day (ToD) tariffs to encourage energy demand during solar hours, ultimately aiming to stabilize power supply and manage rising energy prices effectively.
