The Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a two-day enforcement drive targeting drunken driving, resulting in the penalization of 2,654 motorists and the collection of ₹2.65 crore (approximately $320,000 USD) in fines. The operation, overseen by Rajeev Krishna, the Director General of Police, involved checking 69,683 vehicles across 135 toll plazas. Authorities noted that drunken driving was a significant factor in road accidents, contributing to 8.61% of incidents in 2023. The campaign aimed to mitigate risks, especially during weekends and late-night hours when such incidents are more common. In addition to checking for intoxicated drivers, police teams verified High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on trucks and dumpers transporting construction materials. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, first-time offenders can face fines of up to ₹10,000 and imprisonment, while repeat offenders may incur fines of ₹15,000 and longer jail terms.
