The Election Commission of India stated it will conduct repolling in West Bengal's Assembly elections if allegations of electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering are proven true. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards such offenses. This announcement follows claims from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that their symbols were obscured on EVMs in certain polling booths. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a video alleging that tape was placed over the party's symbol in booths 144 and 189 in the Falta Assembly seat. While the authenticity of the video is under review, the Election Commission is examining reports from district election officers and observers. Agarwal noted that preliminary checks have not indicated any tampering during the handling of EVMs. He warned that if tampering is confirmed, a repoll will be conducted in affected booths or even the entire constituency if numerous complaints arise. The Commission has received 2,196 complaints from 142 constituencies during the election process. Meanwhile, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya expressed confidence in winning a majority, criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and stating that voters sought change despite facing challenges. The results of the elections are set to be announced on May 4.
