The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi is set to introduce an Atal Canteen, which will operate from 10 am to 10 pm. This initiative will provide subsidized meals for just ₹5 (approximately $0.06 USD) per thali, specifically targeting families visiting the hospital who come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has allocated a budget of ₹30 lakh (around $36,000 USD) for the canteen's construction, expected to be completed within two months. Currently, AIIMS has limited canteen hours, serving lunch and dinner in shorter time slots, but the new canteen will offer extended hours to accommodate visitors. The Atal Canteen scheme, launched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government on December 25, 2022, aims to provide nutritious meals to economically weaker sections, with plans for 40 additional canteens across the city. As of April 2026, 74 canteens are operational, with ongoing expansions.
