The Maharashtra government has approved a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) to facilitate financial assistance for high-cost organ transplant procedures. Under this initiative, patients can now receive support for complex treatments costing between ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,000 USD) and ₹22 lakh (approximately $26,600 USD). The financial aid will be sourced from a dedicated corpus fund established under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). All residents of Maharashtra are eligible for this aid, regardless of their income source, provided they obtain necessary approvals under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA). The SOP outlines a detailed documentation process, including requirements for specific procedures like bone marrow transplants and heart valve implants.
To ensure efficient processing, a three-level committee structure has been created. This includes a Scrutiny Committee for initial application verification, a Medical and Financial Approval Committee for clinical necessity evaluation, and a Special Treatment Assistance Committee for final oversight. The government aims to streamline approvals and expedite financial support for critically ill patients. Currently, hospitals will submit applications on behalf of patients, and funds will be transferred directly to hospital accounts, with an online application system planned for future implementation. This initiative follows the expansion of the MJPJAY scheme in 2023, which increased annual treatment coverage from ₹1.5 lakh (approximately $1,800 USD) to ₹5 lakh per family.
