The electoral mapping exercise in Maharashtra, which began two months ago, has revealed stark disparities in participation rates between urban and rural areas. The Mumbai Suburban district has recorded only 36.31% mapping, significantly below the state average of 64.77%. In contrast, Gadchiroli district, known for its tribal population, achieved an impressive 90.2% participation rate. This mapping process aims to link current voter data with the electoral rolls from 2002, easing the verification process for voters. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated this pre-Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise online, allowing for quicker verification of existing voters. However, urban areas face challenges, including high migration rates and a shortage of booth-level officers (BLOs). Chief electoral officer S Chockalingam noted that increased intra-city migration and manpower constraints are significant factors in the low mapping rates in cities. To address these issues, municipal corporations have been directed to enhance the number of BLOs, and cooperative housing societies are being encouraged to assist in upcoming door-to-door surveys.
