On Friday, the Supreme Court of India addressed the issue of several petitioners whose names were removed from the voters' list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. This includes 65 individuals who claimed they were on election duty. The court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, directed these petitioners to approach the Appellate Tribunals for resolution instead of entertaining their plea directly. Senior Advocate M R Shamshad highlighted the irony of election officials being unable to vote, as their Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers were deleted without prior notice. Despite this, the court recognized the high voter turnout of 92.88% in the first phase of the 2026 Assembly elections, which was noted as a historic achievement. The court also commended the peaceful nature of the polling, with only minor incidents of violence reported. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta praised the security forces for maintaining law and order during the elections. The Supreme Court granted petitioners the liberty to seek urgent hearings from the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court or the Appellate Tribunals for their appeals regarding voter exclusion.
