The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has notified rules to regulate online gaming under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming (PROG) Act, 2025, effective from May 1, 2025. The new regulations facilitate the establishment of the Online Gaming Authority of India, which will oversee compliance and enforcement. Notably, there will be no mandatory registration for online games that do not involve real money. The framework categorizes online games into three types: social games, e-sports, and money games. While social games can generate revenue through subscriptions without payouts, e-sports can offer pre-declared prizes, provided they are recognized as sporting events. Money gaming, where users stake money, remains prohibited. Violators face penalties of up to 3 years' imprisonment and fines of up to โน1 crore (approximately $120,000 USD). The authority will have quasi-judicial powers to determine game classifications and address user complaints.
