In Mohali, Punjab, India, the implementation of an AI-powered traffic surveillance system has led to the issuance of 5.78 lakh e-challans over the past year. Launched at a cost of ₹77 crore, the system comprises more than 351 AI-enabled cameras strategically placed at 17 key locations. These cameras utilize Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology and are monitored continuously from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Sohana police station. Initially, the system saw a surge in traffic violations, with 1,83,825 challans issued during the first 95 days, averaging nearly 1,935 per day. The data indicates that 54,470 e-challans were issued in March 2025, rising to a peak of 58,697 in April. However, the number of fines fluctuated throughout the year, with a notable decline in September before rising again in subsequent months. Overall, the system has effectively captured over 6.21 lakh violations within eight months, generating fines worth approximately ₹1.40 crore in just the first week.
