On Saturday, India launched the Cell Broadcast System (CBS), a telecom-based alert mechanism designed to send emergency warnings directly to mobile phones in specific areas. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the initiative, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The CBS aims to enhance disaster response for India's 1.4 billion citizens by delivering alerts instantly, even during network congestion. Unlike SMS alerts, which can be delayed, CBS messages appear as pop-up notifications with a loud alert tone. The system was tested nationwide, with users receiving messages in English, Hindi, and regional languages. The CBS is built on the existing Integrated Alert System, which has already sent over 134 billion SMS alerts in more than 19 languages. It is designed to operate across all mobile network generations, ensuring that alerts reach everyone in a target area, including roaming users. Officials emphasized that alerts cannot be turned off during actual emergencies, making this system a crucial tool for timely disaster communication.
