The reopening of the Mumbai Monorail has been delayed beyond the initial May 7 deadline set by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL). The delay is attributed to the pending second layer of safety inspections, which have not yet commenced. Sources indicate that the Monorail services, which connect Jacob Circle and Chembur via Wadala, are now expected to resume by the end of May. The Monorail was originally inaugurated in February 2014 but was suspended on September 20, 2025, after concerns about its safety arose due to technical glitches. Earlier this year, MMMOCL had set the May 7 deadline for the manufacturer, Medha Servo Drives, to prepare the 19.54 km system for re-commissioning. Although Medha met its obligations, MMMOCL assigned Power Mech Projects to operate and maintain the Monorail. The first safety clearance was obtained on February 20, and modifications to the Monorail's tyres and signalling systems have been implemented. The second inspection, led by retired Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety P S Baghel, will assess the Monorail’s overall safety, including fare collection systems and scheduling. Despite not being mandatory, this additional inspection was deemed necessary due to previous issues. Once operational, Power Mech Projects will charge ₹296.4 crore for five years of service. Prior to its suspension, the Monorail served up to 20,000 passengers daily, particularly during the monsoon season.
