On Thursday, the staff association of Dyal Singh Evening College in New Delhi staged a protest against the proposed renaming of the institution to honor Sikh warrior Banda Singh Bahadur. This follows Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh's announcement in December 2025 during Vir Bal Diwas, which has been met with strong opposition from faculty members. The staff association submitted a memorandum demanding that the legacy of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia be preserved and called for an immediate meeting to discuss the renaming. They also requested a written assurance that the college's location will remain unchanged, citing a clause from the transfer order that stipulates the name cannot be altered as long as the college is in the same location. Despite expectations that the issue would be addressed at an upcoming Executive Council meeting, DU registrar Vikas Gupta confirmed that it is not on the agenda for the meeting scheduled for April 29. This is not the first attempt to rename the college; previous proposals in 2017 faced significant backlash and were ultimately halted. Critics argue that renaming an established institution is unnecessary and undermines its historical significance.
