In New Delhi, thousands of dead fish have been discovered floating in the Najafgarh drain near the Dhansa regulator, raising alarms among environmental activists. Bhim Singh Rawat, a member of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People, indicated that the mass mortality is likely due to the inflow of untreated residential effluents and industrial waste. This pollution, coupled with rising temperatures, has led to a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels, critical for fish survival. The Najafgarh drain, notorious for its pollution, flows directly into the Yamuna River, exacerbating concerns about water quality. A recent analysis by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee revealed that the biological oxygen demand (BOD) in the drain was recorded at 60 mg/l, significantly higher than the acceptable standard of 30 mg/l. Experts, including Radhey Shyam Sharma from Delhi University, stress that such mass fish deaths serve as bio-indicators of environmental stress and call for urgent investigation and corrective measures to restore ecological balance.
