In a significant move, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the suspension of three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, including former Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyel, in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case. The Chief Minister stated that the suspensions were a result of a fact-finding exercise conducted by the Home Department and Chief Secretary, which revealed mishandling of the case by senior police officials. The CBI has been tasked with leading the main investigation into the incident. Adhikari outlined that departmental proceedings would be initiated against the suspended officers, including Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta, for their roles in improper filing of the First Information Report (FIR) and other alleged financial misconduct. The Chief Minister also indicated that both the victim's family's account and the police's version would be considered, along with the conduct of any involved ministers. Furthermore, the language used by a Deputy Commissioner of Police during a press conference will be examined as part of the ongoing scrutiny of the case.
