On Wednesday afternoon, Gurpreet Singh Garry, a 29-year-old readymade garment shop owner, was shot dead in his vehicle near Pandori village in Moga district, Punjab. Family members revealed that Garry had been receiving extortion threats from gangsters and had been assigned a police gunman for protection, who was absent during the incident. His father, Kulwant Singh, expressed concern when Garry failed to respond to calls, leading to the discovery of his lifeless body in the driver's seat of his Mahindra Scorpio. The police confirmed that a forensic team is investigating the crime scene. This murder is reminiscent of the killing of businessman Sanjay Verma in July 2022, which sparked protests across the state. The Punjab government has launched a Gangster-Free Punjab campaign, offering rewards for information on fugitives, but targeted killings related to extortion continue to pose a significant security threat in the region.
