In Pune's Kedgaon, two doctors, Swati Lavangare and Tukaram Yashwant Mote, have been booked for allegedly conducting illegal abortions at Lavangare Maternity and Infertility Hospital. The case was uncovered during a police inspection on June 6, revealing that Lavangare, who is not a qualified gynecologist, had been performing abortions unlawfully and maintaining an illegal stock of abortion pills. The investigation is part of a larger probe into illegal sex determination practices in the region, which previously implicated a bogus doctor, Annasaheb Giri, who used a portable ultrasound machine for illegal fetal sex determination. Following the revelations, an FIR was filed against five individuals, including three doctors, with Mote being arrested. The investigation has now been transferred to the Economic Offences Wing, highlighting ongoing concerns about unlawful medical practices in Maharashtra.
