The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has faced challenges attracting applicants for its housing lottery for 1,221 under-construction flats in Kannamwar Nagar, Vikhroli (East), primarily due to its proximity to the Kanjurmarg landfill, which ranks as the 12th-highest methane-emitting site globally according to a 2026 University of California study. To increase participation, MHADA has decided to split the housing stock, transferring 610 flats to the High Income Group (HIG) category. The decision aims to enhance citizen involvement in the lottery process, with changes reflected on MHADA's lottery portal starting Thursday noon. Additionally, the application deadline has been extended to May 28. In a bid to attract more buyers, MHADA previously reduced the prices of the flats by 7.5%, making them more affordable, with prices now ranging from ₹1,34,66,434 to ₹1,37,03,783 (approximately $162,000 to $165,000 USD). Each allottee will also receive a free parking slot as part of the offer. The Bombay High Court has warned of potential closure of the Kanjurmarg dumping ground if pollution issues are not addressed promptly.
