Residents of Haji Noorani Chawl, located near Prabhadevi railway station in Mumbai, began vacating their homes on Tuesday after a prolonged standoff with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The evacuation is part of the construction of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor, which requires the site for erecting pillars. While eight families have successfully relocated, three families remain, citing insufficient alternative housing options provided by the MMRDA. These families have been offered a temporary relocation package of ₹20,000 per month for six months, but they have declined to leave, insisting that their homes should be repaired if damaged during construction. The demolition of the adjacent Laxmi Sadan building began on March 27, as part of the same project. Initially, MMRDA planned to acquire 19 buildings for the corridor, but this was reduced to just two. The project, expected to cost over ₹1,000 crore, aims to improve connectivity between the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Atal Setu, with a completion deadline set for December 2026.
