The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking steps to enhance the regulation and safety of overhead cables in the city. Following directives from the standing committee, a meeting led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Diwate focused on developing a new policy. This policy will draw from the Hyderabad model, which includes setting a standard height for overhead cables. A comprehensive citywide survey will be conducted to assess existing cable installations and identify areas where cables may need to be routed underground, particularly at road crossings, to improve safety and infrastructure management. The PMC plans to regulate the installation process by allowing only authorized agencies to lay cables and may charge for the use of poles for cable infrastructure. A detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) is being prepared and will be submitted for approval, with public safety as the foremost priority.
