The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced significant changes to the accreditation and operational framework for deemed universities in India. Effective from April 21, 2026, the new regulations allow autonomous and constituent colleges of state universities to apply for deemed university status, contingent upon state government approval. This change aims to enhance the accessibility of higher education institutions to achieve university status. Furthermore, the previous requirement mandating a 3.01 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) for three consecutive accreditation cycles has been replaced. Institutions now need to hold accreditation for three cycles, including the latest one, or an equivalent National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grade. Additionally, deemed universities receiving significant government funding must demonstrate the ability to generate at least 50% of their revenue independently to continue operating under existing agreements. These amendments reflect the UGC's commitment to improving the academic landscape in India by providing more flexibility and autonomy to educational institutions.
