On Monday, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court provided interim relief to teachers and non-teaching staff of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools by staying a directive from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) that mandated their deployment for census duties. The court's ruling followed petitions filed by Deepali Dabli, president of the CBSE School Staff Welfare Association, and The Sikh Education Society, challenging the legality of the NMC's order dated March 23, 2026. The petitioners argued that the directive was arbitrary and illegal, asserting that CBSE school employees do not fall under the Census Act's jurisdiction. The court noted that teachers from both aided and unaided schools should not be assigned census or election duties, emphasizing that no pressure or punitive measures should be enforced against the staff until further notice. The court has also directed that the central and state governments respond to the notices by the next hearing.
