In a significant move for parents in Maharashtra, the state government has established a committee to formulate a structured fee refund policy for private, unaided schools. This initiative comes in response to concerns regarding the lack of clarity on refund amounts when admissions are canceled. The committee, constituted on May 2, will be chaired by Sharad Gosavi, the director of primary education, and includes various members such as retired education director Dinkar Temkar and representatives from private schools and parent bodies. Currently, while the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fee) Act, 2011, provides some regulation of school fees, it does not specify refund policies. The committee is tasked with reviewing existing provisions and recommending a balanced approach that considers both parents' and institutions' interests. Education commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh emphasized that the committee's comprehensive review will lead to formal policy recommendations within 30 days.
