On Friday, the price of commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in India surged by 47.8%, rising from ₹2,078.50 to ₹3,071.50 per 19 kg cylinder. This increase is attributed to high international energy prices amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, particularly due to supply disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route. Additionally, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) raised the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for foreign airlines by approximately $76.55 per kilolitre, bringing the new price to $1,511.86 per kilolitre. The 5 kg free trade LPG cylinders, often used by migrant laborers and students, will also see a price hike in line with the increase in the 19 kg cylinder. Despite these hikes, OMCs have maintained prices for regular petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG, which are consumed by the general public, unchanged. India, as the world's third-largest crude oil consumer, imports over 88% of its crude oil, making it susceptible to fluctuations in global oil prices.
