NASA is advancing its plans to return humans to the Moon, particularly focusing on the development of lunar spacesuits necessary for astronauts to explore the lunar surface. A recent report from NASAβs Inspector General highlights the challenges faced in the procurement process. NASA awarded two contracts worth up to $3.1 billion for the Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) to Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace. However, Collins Aerospace has since withdrawn from the project, citing difficulties in managing the contract profitably. This leaves Axiom Space as the sole provider for the spacesuits, raising concerns about the timeline for NASA's ambitious goal to land humans on the Moon by 2028. The report indicates that if Axiom cannot meet its requirements, NASA may have to continue using outdated Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) for the International Space Station (ISS) and significantly alter its lunar plans.
