NASA's Curiosity rover has made significant strides in the search for life on Mars by discovering over 20 organic molecules in ancient sandstone formations, specifically in the Glen Torridon area of Gale Crater. This breakthrough was achieved through a unique wet chemistry experiment using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), marking the first time this chemical has been utilized in off-Earth research. Among the identified compounds are naphthalene and benzothiophene, some of the largest and most complex organic molecules found on the planet. Notably, the detection of possible nitrogen heterocycles is significant as these structures could lead to the formation of more complex nitrogen-bearing molecules, essential for life. The findings suggest that organic material can persist on Mars for billions of years, which is encouraging for future explorations. The data will assist in optimizing further TMAH experiments on Curiosity and inform upcoming missions, including the Rosalind Franklin Mars rover and the Dragonfly mission to Saturn's moon, Titan, both scheduled for 2028.
