The Chhattisgarh High Court, led by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal, has directed the state's chief secretary to submit a personal affidavit regarding the enforcement of plastic ban laws. This order came during a hearing on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Raipur-based environmental activist Nitin Singhvi, who alleged significant failures in implementing the Chhattisgarh Plastic and Other Non-Biodegradable Material (Regulation of Use and Disposal) Act, 2020. The petition claims that, despite numerous notifications since 2014 banning plastic carry bags, prohibited products continue to circulate in the state. Singhvi criticized authorities for focusing on penalizing small vendors rather than addressing illegal manufacturing and distribution networks. The court noted the severe environmental consequences of unchecked plastic waste, including soil and water pollution and threats to wildlife. The next hearing is scheduled for May 13.
